The Child Seatbelt Law September 06

The general rule is that all children up to 135 cms in height should use the correct child seat or booster with perhaps a few exceptions.   (135cm is 4ft 5inches)

Parents are therefore asked to consider if the Child is likely be above that height by the wedding day, so planning a wedding a year in advance or so, poses a small problem when it comes to the children, clearly some grow so fast and others not so fast.

We have decided that we will not be supplying child seats, and that Parents are politely requested to supply their own, we have limited storage space in our cars and some parents have already said that they would prefer to use their own due to hygiene issues etc.

We only have lap belts in the rear of our cars, so parents of small children are asked to ensure that if they are providing us with Child seats on the day, to make certain beforehand that the booster seat is compatible with Lap Belts.

Nothing in seat belt wearing regulations prevents Children using a front seat unless there is an active Air Bag fitted.  Our Cars don’t have Air Bags so you may use the Lap & Diagonal belt in the front to secure your child seat.

The problem here is that they will recognise familiar voices behind them that they are familiar with, but if they look at the driver it will be a stranger, this in our experience creates stress in the child and they will struggle to turn around to look for the faces they know. This then can distract the driver.

There are loopholes. First there is an exception for “ unexpected necessity over a short distance “  So no child will be refused on the day, but it must be remembered that a Wedding is a planned event , so you should plan for the children .

Secondly it was claimed on BBC Top Gear programme, that the Police have no legal right to measure a Child. (Not confirmed on the day that this page was written)

Loopholes do nothing for child safety, so if any one would like to learn more this link will take you to the relevant information.
